Happy New Year!

I've often wondered why people wait for new years to make a resolution, it seems the hangover would put people off making positive changes for a few days. But I guess an arbitrary date is better than none. I'm not exactly sure what resolution I have, but if I can make 2012 anywhere near as wonderful as I made 2011 then I think I'm doing something right. But as something to commend the new year I did do one of those "I wonder what it would look like if" things, so in a state of new years euphoria and sleep deprivation I shaved off my eyebrows... oh come on, like none of you have ever thought about it!

And yes, I felt a little Lisa D'amato inspired.

Besides all that I had a great new years spent camping out in the middle of no where at the hippy festival 'Confest'. It was hot, and dusty, and the crazies were numerous, but man it was fun, we had mud baths, silent discos, comedy shows, met some cool people... it was a blast :) If you're in Melbourne or Sydney you should defiantly check it out.

What did you all get upto for your end of year celibrations? Partying? Fireworks? or just had a good sleep?

Heres to everyone having a fun holiday! This has been an amazing year for me and I'm thinking next year will be even better.

We may have lost greats, and we have a few less villans. And personally I've both met and waved goodbye to a new and very close friend. I've survived the end of the world as well as a 15 hour work shift.

Remember if you're going to give to any charities this holiday please consider a secular one, religiously run charities like the salvation army are homophobic and there are so many better options.

A great man has died, a an irreplaceable mind has burned out. The candle that shined so bright has extinguishable all too soon. Christopher Hitchens, aged only 62 has died.

A fantastic thinker, a provoking writer, and for what I love him for most, a fierce debater. Of all the champions of the new atheist movement, I think I loved him most of all. I could not help but enjoy his eloquent and sharp wit. I could not help but grin whenever he would haughtily tear down his opponents with a laugh and a might 'a-ha!'. And I can not help but be inspired by his passionate defiance of political correctness in the face of foolish adversaries.

I hope for those of who you who never walked the path that crossed his work, that you take a little time to watch this man speak as he did best, or read his writings. I leave you with one of my favourite debates of his, where he joins the fabulous Stephen Fry against the forces of the Catholic Church.

Can I just say first of all, I LOVE Victoria's bipoler weather, its never too hot or too cold for very long :D everywhere else is well into summer and we get RAIN!

Yesterday I went to see some new paintings in the National Gallery of Vioctoria with a friend of mine. Nether of us had ever really talked about such artwork before, but it turns out both of us have a special place in our hearts for J.M.W Turner. I fell in-love with his vivid, passionate landscapes and deep, shapeless earth tones when I was in high-school art class.

Looking Back

I'm coming up to my 23rd birthday (tomorrow), so I thought I really should get over my desire to avoid work when I'm not at work. I know I've not posted anything in months, so I'm going to try and use this blog thingy more, and share my interests besides just photography.

It was about this time last year that I moved over to Victoria, and for someone moving out of home it has been a rather wonderful adventure. From living in a couch bed in Coburg, to moving in with someone very special to me, playing Vollyball for the first time, camping with a hoard of hippies, and meeting wonderful new friends. It was both the hardest thing to do, and the best thing I've ever done.

I've not done any personal work of late, I've found that I'm really not enjoying the business aspects of being a photographer, I love the work its self, but promotion, selling your self, its turning my hair grey (really). So I've been earning my rent money by working for other photographers, meaning I get to shoot, get paid, and leave the rest to those a little more experienced than my self in the business aspects.

But every now and again I feel inspired to really do my own thing again, none was more special than the inspiration I got from Googles movie 'Life in a Day' I and I think all of you should watch it if you have a spare hour or so in your day! (make sure subtitles are on by clicking the CC button). I think Google was amazing to do this; its a movie pieced together from people all over the world, they even sent out cameras so people in third world countries could tell there story. It is filmed over a single day, and is fantastically edited, you get to see some amazing things, and meet some amazing people.

Here's looking forward to another brilliant year with many more adventures, beautiful moments, and harsh life lessons. =)

On my way to work today I saw a group of ravens overhead, two of them locked in battle, spireling down towards my car speeding towards them, and then at the last second fly away in opposite directions around my car.

About ten minutes later the car infront of my crashed into the car infront of it just as I had turned to overtake them, practcly spitting shattered glass towards and screaming the harsh scream of metal pounding into metal.

If I was the kind of person who believed in omens and portents I'm sure I'd have something far more interesting to say about all this...

One thing I actually like about work that starts before the sun rises is that you get to watch the sky brighten up as you drive to work. Its a shame one cant just stop on the free-way, sit back and watch. Unfortunately the honking of horns tends to be a mood killer. But I did get a few shots before the horse show yesterday.

Tommorow I'll be heading down to Werribee to photograph horses with Mr Jim Hillman with a very early morning start. It feels strange to be waking up at 4am in preparation, but hey, the horses don't wait. If you are a horse lover, or ride in any shows, I would defiantly recommend contacting Jim, he's a lot braver with these animals than I.

Today my housemate made blue fried chicken, why do people not put food colouring in everything? One day we'll work our way up to tie-dye chicken and rainbow chips. I'm the weakest person in the world when it comes to spicy food, so they brought a tear to my eye, but damn, I would buy this stuff.

The traffic in Melbourne is awful. We could walk faster. 2km in half an hour.

Heading up to Furntree Gully to walk the "1000 steps" which is less than 1000 in reality but feels like much more.

I dare say my legs will fall off.

Wilson Botanical Gardens

Hai guys, I dont know about you guys but sometimes it feels good just to get out and see the places around you. I tend to stick to what I know at times, with food, but every now and again I try and force my self out of a hole and enjoy something new, in this case, walking to the Wilson Botanical Gardens.

I got there as the sun was wandering down towards the horizon, leaves falling at our feet, and friends to laugh with, these are the sweet moments.

Looking out towards Melbourne, we sat on that lookout for hours.

I'm pretty sure the villain of my story would be those monsters who take drivers license photos and the like, somehow they always seem to be awful.

When I was a kid every time school photo day would come around I would just happen to get a coldsore, ONLY the day before, every year and without fail! It was a curse, and no matter how much I protested they would never retouch it out. It has been suggested to me as a reason on why I developed a love for photography, some kind of personal revenge on all those embarrassing photos.

Whenever I'm taking someone's photo it feels like meditation, where there is only me, the camera and shapes and shadows, but whenever the final photo pops up on the screen and I feel jealous it was not a photo of me, I get a little rush of happiness and know I'm one of the good guys.

In Defence of Meaninglessness

Meaningfulness is, I expect, something that someone always expects from an artist. I trust that most of those schooled in art would be trained to find deep and personal meaning in any heap of garbage that they are tasked with the challenge of redefining as 'art'. Sometimes I hate the term 'art' it smells of the undefinable and lazy, the contrary and predictable, even as some peers would call it 'utter wank'.

Art is the blanket term, covering all subcategories of personal expression. But perhaps it is as useless as saying 'I am human' for what defines a human seems as hard to define as what makes an artist. A quadriplegic as as human as the able bodied biped.

In my last post, I put up a photo taken of my self, with photo magic having my self whispering into my own ear. Is this any less art because I didn't assign a meaning to it before or after? I knew what I wanted it to look like certainly, but beyond asthetics it was unplanned. My house mate said to me when he saw it 'I dont get it, what does it mean?' and I had no real answer.

But what if art has no meaning, what if we leave the undefinable undefined, and simply say that if there is meaning in anything it is up to the person to find it, to see some kind of reflection in them selves. To me, being an artist is often simply about creating aesthetic in imagery that people can find meaning, not meaning that people can find in aesthetic. Not to say that there is any negative in assigning a strict narrative to any kind of imagry, but does a lack of it make it any less meaningful?

For me the joy of art is simply exploring, not necessarily exploring somewhere unknown, but exploring wherever can be explored. Be it photography, painting, sculpture, poetry, music, dance, or any other medium of expressing what cannot be expressed in common parlance, sometimes it is the meaningless that feels most meaningful in my life.

I'm horribly afraid of spiders, which made this photo particularly painful. Although the spider was a speck on my small finger I cant help but breath faster and feel like running whenever I look at those eight legs... yuck.

Also, tonight I went rock climbing, and boy am I sucky at it. I can scale a tree with ease, but those nasty coloured rocks are evil! I wanted to get a photo but I forgot my camera *shame* maybe next time.

I thought I'd see how I went with a simple panoramic of the front yard. For those of you who don't know it just involves taking a long line of phones and stitching them together so its one long photo. Often panoramic photos are used to take large photos of city scapes or to show an entire room in one picture.

Its often far to easy to shoot photographs from a typical direction, often because that direction is tried and true. But I think part of the challenge of being a photographer is to find those angles that are not obvious and look good. I had to lie in the dirt to take this shot, but its all part of the fun :)

Finally got the Internet back online! Luckily my phone kept me up to date with e-mails and such but I seem to have fallen behind in this photo challenge stuff so here's a few photos I took during my down time (I think I missed a day or so but you'll have to forgive me).

Notice the classy new chandeliers at this classy restaurant.

Every week we play vollyball (which I suck at but enjoy anyway) and after every game we head down to a fast-food strip to reward our efforts. Most of the time we don't actually eat at maccas, we go to one of the other food places and just walk in and start eating there because its so classy :P they've been giving us the eye lately because we don't buy anything.

I figured it was time for another self portrait.

I've been talking to a lot of people about self esteem lately, about believing in them selves and all they have to offer. Certainly, I cannot pretend be ignorant of that. I don't think anyone can. Its Australian culture to talk your self down, and its silly, one has to know their weaknesses and limits, but damn it, if I'm great why cant I say so?

You know when your in the shower, and you slip into fantasy (and often loose a few hours of the day, oops) I had one of those moments where I was thinking how great life would be if I had another me, someone to help keep me on track, share my work, share my thoughts, and to tell me when I'm being dumb and that everything will be fine. I realised at the end there was no reason I wouldn't tell my self that.

With these ideas in mind all that was left was to try and capture them in a photo. Did I succeed? Well damn it no matter what you think I'm telling my self YES! :D

Haven't really felt like my self today, I think the hermit lifestyle is starting to make me crack. Which brings me to our washing machine, it is also cracked, and leaks so we have it outside. So yes, I can relate mr washing machine.

I decided as I was ordering new business cards it was time for the old to go the way of the Dodo (assuming it was cooked alive) and this phoenix rise will mean cards with the correct information as well as less people asking why my pictures not on it (as there will be no photos on the new ones).

I thought this merited a little photo memorial marking my first week of daily photos, which does seem to be challenging me.

This morning I was up at 6 and decided I would try and get some shots of the sun rising, but soon found out that in suburbia sunrise isn't as spectacular as it is on the open fields of the country or ocean. But as I was waiting I got this shot of the street light just before it turned off for the day, and I thought it looked pretty cool anyway against the overcast grey sky. The early morning rush to get things moving. The silence and darkness melting away to the sounds and cars of people heading off to work.

Photos of the Day

Today I thought I needed at least 3 photos to illustrate what I wanted to show. My house-mate got a calendar of paper aeroplanes for x-mas a different one for every day. Since day one I don't think we've bothered to store one, throw one away, or do anything but leave them at a dusty grave the moment their flights into walls have broken them beyond any usefulness. Their paper hulls devastated by three men throwing them at each other without warning. Their dreams of flight no longer worth the paper they are printed on.
